Dutch politician Pim Fortøyn's killer will be paid monetary compensation

Volkert van der Graaf, the killer of Dutch politician Pim Fortøyn, is to receive a monetary compensation of 2,829 euros. This decision was rendered on 29 April by the Council of State of the Netherlands. The amount paid consists of an actual compensation of 1260 euros, as well as reimbursement of the costs that Van der Graaf incurred in the course of his claim. In 2018, Van der Graaf filed a request for access to his personal data available to the Ministry of Justice and Security. According to the law, the Ministry was obliged to report either its decision or to postpone consideration of the request within a month. The Ministry's letter was signed by the Minister of Legal Protection, Sander Decker, but not by the Minister of Justice, Ferd Grappergaus, because the latter found that the letter by a colleague had also been signed on his behalf. Van der Graaf disagreed with this argument and demanded compensation from the Ministry of Justice. The Arnhem District Court in 2019 awarded the Ministry compensation in the amount of 1,260 euros. Following an appeal by Grappergause, the Council of State confirmed the decision. Pim Fortøn was killed on 6 May 2002. In 2003, Van der Graaf was sentenced to 18 years 'imprisonment for this murder. He is released next month.
