In Germany, there is a scandal over the desire of Defense Minister Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer to purchase Russian fighter aircraft F-18 the United States without coordination with the ruling coalition of Social Democrats, Der Spiegel reported. The publication claims that Kramp-Karrenbauer has already written a letter to Pentagon chief Mark Esper, in which she made a request for 45 F-18 fighters. These aircraft are planned to replace the German obsolete Tornado. It was noted that this issue began to be discussed with the previous German Defense Minister Ursula von der Leien, but no agreement was reached. Opponents of this idea, representatives of the Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD), insist that some of the new aircraft should be ordered from the European company Airbus, in particular Eurofighter fighters. At the same time, Der Spiegel claims that 30 of the 45 F-18 ordered by Kramp-Karrenbauer should be in a modification of Super Hornet F-18 capable of carrying nuclear bombs.
