Italy's populists make sense of their historic election defeat

In the regional elections of September 20 21, the Italian populist 5 Star Movement suffered a historic defeat, said one of the party leaders Alessandro Di Battista on Wednesday, September 23. Populists failed to win gubernatorial elections in any of the 6 regions where such elections were held, and their results in municipal elections deteriorated significantly compared to previous years. At the same time as the local elections, a referendum was held in the country, and citizens supported the populist initiative to reduce the number of deputies in both houses of parliament by a third. Based on this, talking about a historical defeat is still inappropriate, one can only consider the problem of defeat in local elections, said Roberto Fico, speaker of the lower house of parliament, in his comment. In the national elections in the spring of 2018, populists won 33% of the vote and formed a coalition with the Matteo Salvini League (in the fall of 2019, liberals took the place of Salvini's party). Currently, the party rating is more than half that.
